From 60 Applicants to 4 outstanding new members
This year’s search for new members of the Resident Influence Committee (RIC) has been one of the most successful and most competitive we have ever undertaken.
The level of interest from residents across our communities was exceptional, with 60 people applying to join the committee and help shape the services and decisions that affect their homes and neighbourhoods.
Shortlisting: A Herculean Task
The first stage of the process was led by our Customer Experience team, who undertook the enormous task of reviewing all 60 applications. Their job was to identify residents who demonstrated a strong interest in influence, a commitment to constructive challenge, and the potential to contribute meaningfully to the committee’s work.
After careful assessment, the team shortlisted 20 applicants to move forward. Given the quality of the applications, narrowing the field to 20 was no small achievement.
Stage One Interviews: 15 Minutes Each, All Day Long
To ensure fairness and consistency, we held a full day of 15‑minute introductory interviews with all 20 shortlisted residents. These conversations allowed us to understand each applicant’s motivations, communication style, and early insight into resident influence.
From these interviews, we selected six candidates to progress to the final stage.
Stage Two Interviews: In‑Depth Assessment
The final stage involved a more detailed 45‑minute interview, including structured questions and a practical exercise. Each candidate was given a genuine committee paper to review and comment on, allowing us to see how they engaged with real RIC material and how they approached scrutiny, clarity, and resident‑focused thinking.
Unfortunately, two candidates withdrew on the day, leaving four to be interviewed.
Four Exceptional Residents Selected
The four residents who completed the final interviews were outstanding. Each demonstrated:
- A clear understanding of resident influence
- A commitment to improving services for all residents
- The ability to analyse information and provide constructive challenge
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
As a result, we are delighted to confirm that all four have been invited to join the Resident Influence Committee.
These four individuals represent 6.7% of the original 60 applicants – a testament to the rigour of the process and the exceptional calibre required to serve on the RIC.
A Thank You to Everyone Who Applied
We want to extend our sincere thanks to all 60 residents who took the time to apply. The level of interest shows how strongly our communities value having a voice in how services are delivered. Even if you were not selected this time, we encourage you to look out for future opportunities to get involved in resident influence and engagement across emh.
Andy Murtha, Chair of the Resident Influence Committee said:
"As Chair of the Resident Influence Committee, I am incredibly proud of the scale, fairness, and rigour of this year’s recruitment process. The level of interest from residents was remarkable, with 60 people applying to join the committee — the highest number we have seen.
Our Customer Experience team carried out an exceptional shortlisting exercise, narrowing the field to 20 strong candidates. From there, we spent a full day meeting each applicant in 15‑minute interviews, followed by in‑depth 45‑minute assessments for the final stage.
The four residents we have appointed represent just 6.7% of the original applicants, and each demonstrated the insight, commitment, and constructive challenge that define the RIC. I am delighted to welcome them and look forward to the fresh perspectives they will bring as we continue strengthening resident voice across emh."
Looking Ahead
Our four new members will bring fresh perspectives, lived experience, and a strong commitment to resident voice. We look forward to welcoming them at the next RIC meeting and working together to strengthen resident influence across the organisation.
